Al-Jazri Workshop
Smart Timekeepers
Time: 45 minutes, Level: beginner

Workshop Idea

Building a Wearable Clock Inspired by Al-Jazri!

Step into the world of Al-Jazari by designing a wearable smart clock inspired by his ingenious timekeeping devices. Students will assemble and program a micro:bit-based clock, integrating modern technology with historical innovation. This workshop demonstrates how Al-Jazari’s legacy continues to influence today’s advancements in AI and automation.

Objective

Students will assemble and program a smart clock using the micro:bit, drawing inspiration from innovative timekeeping devices throughout history. This project aims to introduce foundational artificial intelligence concepts by achieving two primary objectives: teaching students how to assemble the micro:bit and create a smart clock, and introducing them to the basics of simple programming. Additionally, the project seeks to connect artificial intelligence concepts with the innovations of Al-Jazari, fostering an understanding of historical engineering achievements and their impact on modern technologies.

  • Block-Based Programming: Writing scripts using MakeCode’s block interface to control and display time on the micro:bit.

  • Button Integration: Programming micro:bit’s buttons to set and adjust the time dynamically.

  • LED Display Utilization: Displaying time efficiently using the micro:bit’s 5x5 LED matrix.

  • Timekeeping Logic: Implementing timers, counters, and logic for tracking hours, minutes, and seconds.

  • Hardware Assembly: Connecting and powering the micro:bit to create a standalone smart clock.

  • Creative Customization: Designing personalized clock features, such as alarms or animations.

  • Debugging and Optimization: Identifying and resolving programming issues to improve functionality.

  • Historical Engineering Inspiration: Drawing from Al-Jazari’s innovations to link modern technology with historical designs.

  • Introduction to AI Concepts: Exploring how the micro:bit processes inputs and makes decisions based on programmed logic.
